A Prayer for the Innocent
by Lawrence Strittmatter, Jr.

In the woods,
where incessant youth and nakedness
filled the days,
pine needle blankets kept us from the cold
and a belief in our parents God,
sheltered us from sin.
Say a prayer for the innocent boys!
In the streets,
where torn pages of pornographic lore
and evening TV,
evoked thoughts of flesh
and our desires to kiss the pretty girls
on their lips and neck.
Say a prayer for Freud!
On the tracks,
where cigarette butts, broken bottle and fire,
fueled pubescent dreams of wine, women and song,
and how we purged our bodies man
on that true gateway drug.
Say a prayer for the Marlboro Man!
In the air,
where Radio Beelzebub
plays the musical flute,
and feverish dance and revelry
possess the children,
whose parents fear
the evils of rhythm
and blues.
Say a prayer for Rock and Roll!
In a dream,
where a man can go to escape
the world he forged,
Sex, drugs and song await
to trap all the senses,
of the generation
of God's pure children.
Say a prayer for the innocent boys!
